First I have to say that Critical Literacy is a great class. It has helped me so much and I am learning things every day in class. I would definatly recommend it to people that struggle in comprehending and reading. For me, this class is very hard. I did not get the right impression of this class at first. I thought oh man this is going to be such a bad class because I really don’t like english and we will be writing and reading about different authors that I have never even heard of it and I’m pretty sure I will struggle a lot.
The essay that we just finished that Paulo Freire was very hard to understand. He used very big vocabulary and it was hard to comprehend. Every assignment that we had with this essay especially reading, I struggled a lot. I had to re-read most of the sentences more then once. Once I got that far I had to connect it with what I just read and by that time I have forgotten what I read. So I ended up breaking down each paragraph and in the process look up way to many words but that help because if you don’t understand what the word mean then you miss the point. It was very hard for me to concentrate sometimes when I read it because since the essay was so long and descriptive I lost interest easily. So I had to find a way to push myself to continue on and finish it off. I love going to class and how we have class discussion. I stay pretty focused but sometimes I get distracted cause I have partial ADD.
In my portfolio I have four things posted. Working from the very bottom to the top, first I talked about differences in learning styles and how it’s not good to procrastinate and also if you have any questions, you should ask them because that will help you understand the topic. In my second to last post we had to pick something that relates to Paulo Freire’s essay the “Banking Concept of Education.”I found a poem and it talks about how it is important to have an education. My third post was on a close read pages 248-9. It was very hard to understand. I had to look up many words and got very frustrated with it but I never gave up even though I really wanted to. My very last post we had to re-read the whole entire essay keeping one question in mind. I kept question number three in my mind. I had to get help with this. I want to the writing lab for this post and I ended up getting a lot of information down for that post because I covered and talked about everything that the question asked and had to break it down explaining everything. It is my longest post and it was a whole page single spaced. I hope that my grade won’t fall because of this portfolio because I am a weak writer but I am working really hard on improving that and I worked very hard on all the post and proof read them out loud but you don’t always catch your mistakes.
I am definatly becoming a better writer in this class. I like it how the class is challenging but we still have our awesome discussions to help us understand what we are talking about. I love my critical literacy class and how our teacher and the students respect each other and we have a lot of feedback between the two. My class participation is pretty good for the most part except for me being shy so I don’t talk as much but I am working on that and try my best to always participate in the class discussions but I never interrupt because I consider it very rude so sometimes I end up not saying anything in class because I can’t just come into the conversation. I loved how we had that one day of interviewing and being the intervy. That was so much fun! I love your class and how we have great communication between the students and the teacher.
