My Day Book!
1) My three favorite writings were September 6th, 13th, and October 6th. My first entry that I picked, I talked about an event that I accomplished even though I thought it would be impossible. Even though I may have thought I failed because I did not make it on the high school volleyball team, I achieved something else: I ran a mile under five minutes and I thought that with me and my abilities that it was not possible but I proved myself other wise! My second entry was about my inner intelligence and I talked about me faith because that is a very important part of my life and very important to me. It is who I am today and will be for the rest of my life until the day I die to follow my Lord Jesus Christ and be a walking image of him...but I know I am not perfect and that I will make mistakes. My very last entry I wrote about a formative memory of school. Mine was about learning and the first time when I came to the U.S. And how I had a tutor that taught me English. She did a fantastic job and I will never forget her in my life. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
Number of Entries: 36
Average length: One page
Long or short in between: Most reach a page but some are half page
Long- 20 entries
Short- 16 entries
Notice in my entries- I always tried to aim for a page and most of my entries in some way have my opinion in them.
Change- My entries by the end of the book I was using it for me to write in most of my free-writes. I like writing about my day and everything that has happened so far up to that point or if something is bothering me. Also if their is something that I can not get off my mind I write about that too. My entries towards the end of the semester really showed this and I talked about a lot of my personal life at that point in time.
Value of my daybook? If I lost this book I would go crazy trying to find it because my entries are honest and I wrote about my life. I would basically place a hight value on my day book. It is very important and I like to look over my entries and re-read them. It’s like I’m reading things in the past about me and it brings me joy. It also can be used as a tool of help and tips and never do something again.
I like having a day book only for this class just because to me this was a special class time and period. I was able to pause and for that little time at the beginning of our class period and write. It made me want to write more frequently. It’s like having my own personal journal.
I would encourage my students as a teacher to keep a day book. Honestly to me it helped me a lot and that fact that when you write you have no limits. You can write about whatever you want and no restrictions. And then after we were done, we could share. When that happens, even though you are hones,t you need to keep it clean when you talk to your teacher and fellow classmates.
My entries express myself and the reader gets an ideas of what kind of person I am. I am a clean and well put together girl and would even give advice to people that want it.
2) This semester has been great! Writing choices I have made were to mostly improve my writing. I did not made very specific choices just kind of general ones. This was a big choice for me because before I came to college I just did not like writing. Revision was also huge! When I revised a peer it made the papers better and I don’t have as many mechanical and grammatical errors. I struggled writing the Pratt/Freire essay but once I got stated little by little it got completed and I was really proud of it. I also loved writing the I Am What I Am piece. That was very fun to come up with. Our normal class schedule in Critical Literacy was the first five minutes or so we would write about something in our day book. Then after that was done we had the opportunity to share if we wanted to. Then finally after that Ms. Nance got into our lecture or activity that we would do that specific day. Sometimes it was hard for all of us to concentrate though because everyone was distracted whether it was the music, cell phone or laptop. I will never forget when I got my iPad out for the first time...everyone wanted to play with it!
3) My Participation and Effort in the Class.
I had a hard time self-motivating myself to participate in class and actually talk and ask questions in class. Reading the essays was kind of hard because I never enjoy reading especially when it was something that did not interest me. I liked help your classmates and when we had to give feedback about our progress in our paper that we had to write. I also loved the days where we had our interview kind of day and so to our classmates and ask them about a specific question and talk about it. I am going to be honest some where hard to answer and as the interviewer person it was hard to come up with other questions as well. To succeed in this class, be open about your thoughts and feel the freedom to speak your mind and put your opinion out there. It is your own and no one can judge you for it. I didn’t talk a lot but I did pay attention in class and respected my classmates when they were talking. Sometimes I did share. Sometimes I felt intimidated, so it helped when we did group participation.
4)Analysis and Goal Setting
I have learned to improve my writing and its not all easy. You may struggle at first like I struggled starting a paper but just writing your thoughts down helps. My philosophy has changed about writing because now I like writing more and will continue to write more. I will also revise my papers more because it improved my paper. In this class I did not have many struggles but mostly it was my cell phone. Next time I would put it in my bag pack and not take it out till class ends. Ms. Nance did not have a strict rule like some of my other instructors did which I felt like she was having a hard time communicating with everyone because they were distracted but over all I loved our class. We were a very open class and loved to share and talk. My personal writing/reading/thinking goals are very few but I definitely want to continue to write in a day book even though I don’t have this class anymore! To me it’s my second stress reliever other then exercise. I have to find a new way to approach reading because what I did this semester obviously did not work because I was always behind on reading the essay which was never a good sign. Thinking was a big part of me and still will be when I revise things. It is important to really think about what you are trying to tell your reader or audience and what message you are putting out there!
